Case Study 1: Water Reservoir Scanning

Spotlight Project: South-East Scanning's Groundbreaking Work for Water Infrastructure Services on Behalf of Unity Water

We’re excited to share an in-depth look at our recent collaboration with Water Infrastructure Services (WIS) for UnityWater, focused on a pivotal structural analysis project in Lowood, Queensland. Tasked with the intricate examination of an older water reservoir constructed in the 1980s, our team employed ground-penetrating radar (GPR) technology to uncover critical insights into the reservoir’s integrity, all without existing construction plans to guide us.

🔍 About the Project: The project scope was clear: to provide a thorough structural analysis of the reservoir, investigating internal walls, ceilings, columns, and corbels for voids, defects, and reinforcement. This was crucial for creating accurate as-built plans for a structure that had stood the test of time without revealing its internal secrets.

🛠 The Tools of Our Trade: Proceq GP8000 & IDS C-Thru To tackle this challenge, we utilised two of the most advanced GPR systems available:

  • Proceq GP8000: Known for its unparalleled accuracy and depth penetration, the Proceq GP8000 is a game-changer in detecting and mapping complex structures. Its high-resolution capabilities make it ideal for identifying minute details within concrete, though its sophistication requires skilled operation to interpret the breadth of data it produces.
  • IDS C-Thru: This scanner shines in its user-friendly interface and real-time data processing, offering a more intuitive approach to GPR analysis. While it excels in rapid assessment and visual clarity, it may not delve as deeply as the Proceq GP8000, making it a complementary tool in our arsenal.

🌊 Navigating the Depths: The survey’s environment posed unique challenges, from the humid, confined space of the reservoir to the logistical hurdles of using a pontoon and inflatable boat for navigation. Adhering strictly to safety protocols, we secured confined space permits and employed gas meters for chlorine detection, ensuring our team’s safety while delivering precision results.

📊 Delivering Comprehensive Insights: Our final deliverable to the client was a meticulously detailed report, featuring 3D modelling combined with GPR data. This fusion of technology and expertise provided Unity Water with an unprecedented view of their reservoir’s condition, enabling informed decision-making for maintenance and preservation.

💡 The South-East Scanning Advantage: This project exemplifies our dedication to pushing the boundaries of GPR technology in infrastructure analysis. By leveraging the unique strengths of both the Proceq GP8000 and IDS C-Thru, we overcame environmental and logistical challenges to reveal the unseen, ensuring the longevity and safety of critical water infrastructure.
