Case Study: Advanced Plinth Assessment at EDL Energy's Broome Gas Power Station
South-East Scanning was engaged to perform a detailed structural assessment of the vaporiser plinths and base slab at the Broome Gas Power Station, operated by EDL Energy. Located in the remote region of Broome, Western Australia, this critical project aimed to evaluate the condition of ageing infrastructure to ensure the site’s ongoing safety and efficiency. We delivered a comprehensive analysis that informed essential maintenance decisions by utilising cutting-edge technologies, including ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and Screening Eagle Inspect software.
Project Objectives
The project required South-East Scanning to:
- Evaluate the condition of the vaporiser plinths and the base slab.
- Identify and document cracking, spalling, and other degradation.
- Measure carbonation depth and compressive strength using core samples.
- Assess pH levels of surface water to detect potential acid attack risks.
- Verify as-built reinforcement plans with non-invasive GPR scanning.
- Provide actionable data to support EDL Energy’s maintenance planning.
Challenges
Operating in a remote location presented logistical complexities, requiring meticulous equipment and material transport planning. Furthermore, the harsh environment, including high temperatures and variable surface conditions, necessitated adaptable solutions to ensure accurate results.
Methodology
South-East Scanning employed a combination of advanced non-invasive and destructive testing techniques to achieve the project objectives:
High-Resolution Data Collection
Using Screening Eagle Inspect software, we captured precise datasets for each plinth. This enabled us to create detailed visualisations, highlighting structural irregularities such as cracking and spalling.
Core Sampling and Analysis
We extracted twelve core samples (four from the slab and eight from the plinths) to measure carbonation depth and compressive strength. To ensure the structural integrity of the assessed areas, core holes were repaired with Tamcrete.
pH Level Measurement
A handheld pH meter calibrated with a buffer solution provided accurate surface water pH readings. Results ranged from 7.6 to 8.4, confirming non-aggressive conditions and mitigating concerns about acid attacks.
Ground-Penetrating Radar Scanning
GPR was used to confirm the as-built reinforcement plans, ensuring core samples avoided steel reinforcement. This technique also verified an average concrete cover of 100mm (±10%), revealing no internal voids or anomalies.
Temperature Assessment
Infrared sensors were deployed to measure surface temperatures, establishing a baseline for future freeze-thaw analysis. Planned thermocouple testing will deliver enhanced temperature data for ongoing monitoring.
Results
The assessment provided EDL Energy with critical insights into the structural condition of the vaporiser plinths and slab:
- Structural Integrity: GPR scanning confirmed compliance with reinforcement plans and revealed no significant internal defects.
- Concrete Quality: Core sampling validated the concrete’s compressive strength and carbonation levels, supporting its durability under site conditions.
- Non-Aggressive Environment: Surface water pH levels indicated no immediate risk of acid attack.
- Comprehensive Documentation: All cracking, spalling, and temperature readings were meticulously recorded, ensuring transparency and actionable data.
Key Benefits
- Data-Driven Maintenance: EDL Energy gained a robust dataset to plan targeted maintenance and extend the lifespan of critical infrastructure.
- Non-Invasive Precision: GPR scanning minimises disruption while delivering highly accurate reinforcement mapping.
- Safety Assurance: The evaluation provided confidence in the structural safety of the gas power station.
