What is Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)?

Concrete scanning uses ground penetrating radar (GPR) to locate objects. GPR is a mechanical and geophysical device that uses radar pulses to create a subsurface image. It is non-invasive, non-destructive, and typically takes very little time. What depth of concrete can be scanned?

Depth of GPR penetration depends on the material being surveyed. For example, dry, sandy soils are ideal. This allows the radiation waves to penetrate further, whereas slow, wet, soils such as clay absorb the waves making it hard for the signal to penetrate. Our GP8000 can scan depths of 600mm-700mm.

Can Ground Penetrating Radar determine the difference between rebar, post tension cables, electrical conduits, etc.?

While GPR technology does not determine what type of object/anomaly is being located we (the technicians) are very good at determining what type of reinforcing steel or electrical conduit is present.

How Accurate is Ground Penetrating Radar?

We have found that our typical accuracy is +/- 5mm” to the center of the object (conduit, post tension cables, rebar) being located. Additionally, GPR can also inform you of the depth of the object in the concrete. We have found that our typically accuracy when locating the depth of an object embedded in concrete is +/- 10%.

How long does it take to scan an area for core drilling?

Ground penetrating radar is an extremely efficient and fast technology able to scan large areas in with ease. Our standard layout for a typical core drilling location is 1m² in size. It will likely take us about 20 minutes to scan and mark this area.
