The Waszaj Brothers
A Journey of Innovation and Passion
South-East Scanning was founded by Dion and Aidan Waszaj, brothers who transitioned from Melbourne to Queensland, driven by a passion for exploration and innovation. Dion, with years of experience in the construction industry, discovered his interest in ground-penetrating radar (GPR) technology. Alongside him, Aidan, a former solicitor, and teacher, found the adventure of starting a business captivating. Coming from a long line of small business owners, inspired by their family’s entrepreneurial spirit, they embarked on the journey to create South-East Scanning. “It all started with a scanner,” says Dion. “The seeds of the business were planted when I decided to buy myself a Proceq GP8000 concrete scanner to start a ‘side hustle’ and conduct a few scans after-hours or on weekends while working in construction. Little did I know where that path would lead.”
Our Mission and Vision
Our mission is to empower clients with reliable data for informed decisions, ensuring the safety and efficiency of construction projects. We provide accurate utility locating and mapping services, minimising excavation risks, and supporting the smooth progress of construction activities.
“Our mission was clear from the outset,” Dion explains. “We aimed to provide a service that empowered our clients to make informed decisions by accurately locating and mapping hidden utilities. We aimed to minimise the risks associated with excavation and ensure the smooth progress of construction projects.”
From Learning to Leading
Training with industry experts, including Jeff Moore and Daniel Beech from Locating Unlimited, and gaining hands-on experience with utility locators, we built a company that prioritises strong client relationships, expert advice, and transparent reporting. We focus on delivering unparalleled expertise and responsiveness, ensuring our clients can proceed with confidence.
“Much of my training came from Jamie Ware, a Certified Locator who heads up Orbital Underground Locating,” Aidan recalls. “Jamie’s one-on-one training was invaluable and gave me insights that a 2-day course cannot teach. I love the collaborative nature of the utility locating industry, and the willingness of senior locators to share their knowledge with the next generation”.
Expanding Our Expertise
Our commitment to excellence drives us to continually enhance our services. We have expanded our offerings to include concrete testing, Schmidt hammer testing, ultrasonic pulse testing, and drone mapping and surveying. This dedication has led us to undertake diverse projects, from GPR surveys in Coober Pedy to mapping utilities across South-East Queensland.
“This has led us to undertake some incredible projects,” says Aidan. “We completed a GPR survey in Coober Pedy, South Australia, a few months ago, scanning a series of graded and ungraded roads to ensure the safety of road trains supplying the crew for a US reality TV series, ‘Stars on Mars’.”

Looking Ahead
Our vision is to become the go-to resource for utility locating and mapping in South-East Queensland and beyond. By embracing emerging technologies, fostering innovation, and collaborating with industry leaders, we aim to set new standards for accuracy and reliability. We are committed to sustainable growth, ensuring that our service quality remains uncompromised.
“We aspire to be the go-to resource for utility locating and mapping, trusted by construction companies, engineers, and utility providers alike,” Dion shares. “We want South-East Scanning to be the name that comes to mind when people think of accurate and reliable underground mapping.”
South-East Scanning now manage a crew of 5 utility locators and GPR technicians, including Joshua Taylor and Harley Murray from the Sunshine Coast, and Ezekiel Whitehead on the Gold Coast, with Alexandra Riley managing the office and the books. “Our team really is what makes our company a great one” explains Aidan. “We are privileged to be able to work with such a fantastic, energetic, and passionate team. It really makes me feel like I have the greatest job in the world”.
